Internal validation checks the relation between the individual measures included in the scale, and the composite scale itself. Do you feel confident that you can make truthful and definite statements about what happened in your study? If your study is relatively free of confounds, you will have high confidence in its results.
External validation checks the relation between the composite scale and other indicators of the variable, indicators not included in the scale. Can your results be generalized to people outside of your study?
Construct validation checks what underlying construct is being measured and there are three variants of construct validity - convergent validity and discriminant validity.
- Convergent validity shows if the items that compose a determined scale converge on only one construct.
- Discriminatory validity verifies if a determined construct is significantly distinct from other constructs that are not theoretically related to it.
It refers to the extent to which a measure represents all facets of a given social concept.
